Fettes Rise
A town house remodelling in Inverleith, Edinburgh
Architect: Daniel Bär — 2021
Fettes Rise is a 64 m² remodelling of an end-of-terrace town house in the Fettes Rise development in Inverleith, on the northern edge of Edinburgh. Designed by architect Daniel Bär and completed in 2021, the project repositions a family kitchen and open-plan dining space at the ground floor, opening the volume horizontally toward the courtyard and replacing the existing staircase banister with a screen of treated timber slats. A line of full-height doors and a floor-to-ceiling curtain mark the boundary between the space and the objects that furnish it.
I photographed Fettes Rise on a single day in winter. The cold outside made the interior feel more deliberate — the timber slats, the skylights, the line of doors holding everything in place.
