Remodelled House Joppa
A bungalow remodelling and rear extension, Edinburgh Architect: Daniel Bär — 2024
Remodelled House Joppa is a single-storey rear extension and remodelling of a detached bungalow in Joppa, on the eastern edge of Edinburgh. Designed by architect Daniel Bär and completed in 2024, the 128 m² project replaces an outdated sunroom with a new open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space, nestled within a sheltered apple orchard. Two sculptural roof lights — one circular, one triangular — punctuate the ceiling, defining zones within the open plan. Exposed brick, roughcast blockwork, and lightweight render are unified by a single coat of white paint, stripping away colour to reveal texture and form.
I photographed Remodelled House Joppa shortly after completion, working with the particular quality of light the two roof lights introduce into the space — the circular one drawing a disc of sky onto the floor, the triangular one casting a geometric shadow across the white brick wall.
