Pilgrims House and Studio
A new-build dwelling and studio on the Exmoor coast, Somerset Architect: Daniel Bär — 2018
Pilgrims House is a single-storey, three-bedroom dwelling with a detached studio, built on a steep coastal slope on the outskirts of a village in Somerset, between the moorlands of Exmoor National Park and the Bristol Channel. Designed by architect Daniel Bär and completed in 2018, the 241 m² house is composed of three equal volumes — two closed, framing an open central pavilion for living, dining and kitchen — finished entirely in white brick and concrete. Large sliding doors open the central volume fully to two external terraces, dissolving the boundary between interior and landscape across the seasons.
I photographed Pilgrims House over two days, working with the white surfaces and the shifting light of a Somerset autumn, the building's walls register the hours — shadows of surrounding vegetation moving across them as the day progresses.
